Progut®Extra against E. coli in poultry production
By binding pathogens and inhibiting E. coli attachment to the gut mucus, Progut® Extra aims to mitigate the impact of E.coli on poultry productivity and well-being.

Poultry production today faces significant challenges, including increased susceptibility to infectious diseases and decreased immune responses. In animal production targeting to reduce the use of medication, Hankkija’s patented yeast hydrolysate Progut® Extra is an excellent choice. By binding pathogens and inhibiting E. coli attachment to the gut mucus, Progut® Extra aims to mitigate the impact of E.coli on poultry productivity and well-being.
Today’s chicken and turkeys are more susceptible to various infectious and metabolic diseases than ever before. Immunocompetence of birds has decreased and at the same time cell mediated and inflammatory responses have increased. This results in the birds being less effective at combating bacterial diseases and often leads to unsatisfactory feed intake and performance indices. Consequently, there is growing interest in the use of feed additives with immunomodulatory properties for use in intensive poultry production.
E. coli can be one of the most harmful bacteria in poultry production. Mortality and feed conversion efficiency, productivity and growth are impaired due to inflammations caused by E. coli. One of the biggest challenges for meat production is the high amount of condemned carcases, due to airsacculitis and cellulite caused by E. coli.
Progut® Extra is a unique yeast-based feed ingredient. In scientific trials, it has proven its ability to bind pathogens, and inhibit for example E. coli attachment to the gut mucus and therefore prevent subsequent multiplication of the organism.
E.coli, with type I fimbriae adhesin FimH, binds to yeast mannans, mannose conjugates, and mannose monosaccharide. Almost all entero-pathogenic bacteria use this adhesion mechanism
In an in vitro trial at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, the pathogen binding capacity of Progut® Extra was compared with two competing yeast products and mannose monosaccharide.
Almost all entero-pathogenic bacteria use an adhesion mechanism similar to the two E. coli strains studied here. This involves type I fimbriae adhesin FimH, which binds to yeast mannans, mannose conjugates, and mannose monosaccharide. Figure 1 shows that Progut® Extra significantly outperformed the two other yeast products, as well as the mannose control, in binding capacity for E. coli strains.
Progut® Extra offers a great solution to the challenges posed by E. coli in poultry production. Its ability to bind pathogens and inhibit E. coli attachment helps improve productivity and overall well-being in poultry.
