EuroTier 2022 on November 15 to 18th will be the first major agricultural exhibition in Europe after the travel and meeting restrictions due to Covid-19. Exhibitors will present their newest products and information. Getting the fresh information at face to face meetings has its benefits. While preparing for the exhibition, I started to think what has happened since the previous EuroTier in 2018 and what new information and knowledge we have gained to be shared with you.

Progut® as an original postbiotic has shown new application possibilities

Postbiotics refer to bioactive compounds produced by and from food-grade microbial organisms. They can be microbial metabolites, cell wall fragments or other cellular constituents. The key aspects of postbiotics are that they do not contain any live components, and that their bioactive molecules are already in active form. Thus, the action of postbiotic on animal wellbeing and performance is independent of luminal microbial interactions and microbial composition, unlike the action of probiotics and prebiotics.

Progut® is a postbiotic which was developed well prior to the era of postbiotics. It is produced from a spent brewery yeast by an acid hydrolysis which completely kills the yeast, degrades its cell wall into bioactive fragments of optimal size and releases nucleotides and other beneficial constituents from the cells. The water-solubility of the final product has been optimized to a level which gives the best biological responses. Research by several top-class research groups has shown that Progut® is an effective immunomodulator, balancer of gastrointestinal microbiota and booster of rumen fermentation. Via all these postbiotic effects, Progut® has proven to bring consistent customer benefits by improving the performance and wellbeing of animals. Most recently its benefits have been shown in the feeding of fish and dogs.

Progres® has shown to have an universal mode of action benefitting different animal species

The excellent research by Filip Van Immerseel’s group at the University of Ghent and by Alimetrics Ltd. showed that resin acids of Progres® can reduce the inflammation induced degradation of intestinal tissues by inhibiting the expression and activity of the degrading enzymes, matrix metalloproteinases (MMP’s). This unique and universal mode of action of resin acids which is not dependent on the cause of the inflammation (pathogenic bacteria, parasites, mycotoxins or stress) has recently shown to benefit several animal species. Starting from broilers, turkeys and calves, the proven benefits of Progres® have now extended to sows, piglets, laying hens and aquaculture. For example, the results of three recent scientific trials suggest that dietary resin acids of Progres® make piglets more resilient, reduce post-weaning diarrhea and can be a successful concept in piglet production without feed antibiotics or high dose of zinc. In trials with Asian seabass and white shrimp, dietary Progres® amendment significantly improved growth and feed efficiency of Asian seabass and white shrimp and reduced their mortality. Altogether 14 peer reviewed articles and 33 congress presentations or posters so far form a solid scientific proof of efficacy of the golden drop from Finnish forests.
